Spiritual and Personal Development
April 15th, 2007
Humans are biological and spiritual. Both components are wired for development, in conjunction with each other. The purpose of this is for the human container to hold greater and greater spiritual energy or power in the physical. Because the soul holds such great power or electrical energy it needs to step down incrementally until it is in the physical body. Too much of the soul energy entering before the body is ready physically, mentally and emotionally will blow circuits. The effect is similar to running 220 volts through a 110 appliance.
What’s the difference you might ask between growth and development? Personal and spiritual development happens regardless of whether we are seeking it or not. Personal and spiritual growth refers to when we make a conscious priority in our lives to develop. You might think of personal development as a expansion or growth from the bottom up, while spiritual development is from the top down. What happens energetically is that personal development expands our energy allowing for an easy integration of spiritual energy.
Developing only one and not the other can lead to problems. Some people actively pursue spiritual growth to avoid personal healing and growth. Their body attitude is often “Get me off planet Earth quickly!” On the other side of the coin is the person who has spent years in personal healing and growth but seems to come to a dead end because he hasn’t pursued spiritual growth. This can occur at any time but particularly in the 40s or 50s.
A different problem ensues when personal and spiritual development fall out of sync with each other. In a perfect world, as one personally develops there is a corresponding spiritual development as well. If the personal development gets stopped or delayed due to trauma then the spiritual development will feel like a ton of bricks has dropped on top of you. Mid-life crisis are a reflection of being out sync with personal and spiritual development.
Below are some important milemarkers for spiritual and personal development:
- Birth: The soul fuses into the body just below the belly button.
- Two to Three: The first time of self-identification. The soul is moving more from the oneness energy to its own vibration.
- Nine: The first inkling of leaving childhood. The soul comes in more strongly in preparation for moving into its own spiritual alignment.
- Twelve to Fourteen: The child begins separating from the parents and steps into her own spiritual alignment. This is when her own soul tasks, karma, and soul purpose are activated.
- 27-30: The first Saturn Return. Saturn reflects the soul’s purpose for being in the current lifetime. If the person is headed in the wrong direction, so to speak, the soul will correct the life direction during this time.
- 35: Old souls begin really stepping into their power at this time. Up until now, old souls may seem to jump around and not get established in much of anything. At this age the pieces come together and old souls really step out into the world.
- Mid-fifties: Another Saturn Return. If the personal container has been built too small the soul will blast it wide open. Many people can experience health challenges, career or relationship changes, or (heaven forbid), all of those things at once. The soul will not be denied at this time.
- 60s and beyond: This is a time for moving into spiritual wisdom and giving back to the world. If personal development and spiritual development have kept pace with each other, it’s a time of deep satisfaction, joy and enrichment. Optimally self-identity is less with the personality and more with the soul, becoming the Self-identity. Death is a joyful celebration of birthing into the realm from which we came.
Tools for spiritual development are meditation, energy healing and studying with spiritual teachers. Tools for personal development are psychology, self-help groups and any other program that focuses on self-awareness. Ideally we develop both sides, in sync, for a full and complete life.

You are pointing out essential needs of a healthy human life. Understanding that both personal and spiritual growth are the utmost good for human life is key in any self development quest. Thanks for pointing it out so sharply!
I have a different vision on what you say “Personal and spiritual development happens regardless of whether we are seeking it or not.” I think they not happen just like that. In the case of personal development there is a bigger chance for that. Mainly because we are forced into patterns by our social and cultural environment. But when it comes to spiritual development, that can not happen. This is why we say ‘development’ and not ‘evolution’. It will not occur eventually. Actual spiritual development requires a fully mature person, with a fully aware conscience of his presence in life. Only then it can really start. So, I see no parallels there.
I liked the milemarkers that you propose! You point out the most significant moments in life with great availability of change and self transformation. Good thoughts!
